Thanksgiving Tips

Thanksgiving is a public holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving has traditionally been a celebration of blessing of the year, including the harvest.

Thanksgiving is a holiday infamous for many different verities dishes, many which are not healthy. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while celebrating this special holiday.

Appetizers: Cheese plate that includes cheese cut into small cubes. Nuts in different flavors, pickles, turkey slices, dried no sugar added fruits.

Cheese is a good source of calcium and protein that help fortifies the surface of the teeth.

Chewing crunchy nuts produces saliva, and chewing on vegetables produce lots of saliva to wash away bacteria.

Side dish: green beans sautéed in sesame oil helps reduce the effects of plaque

Dessert: fresh pears/apples slices with honey and yogurt dip is a good satisfying dessert to help neutralize acid on the surface of the teeth

Beverages: tap water that contains fluoride to help reduce damage to the enamel caused by acids, and fighting cavities. (To make it fun you can infuse your water with apples and cinnamon)

Use your dental benefits before the year ends

  • Your yearly maximum renews each year. Unused dental benefits DO NOT rolls over.
  • Your yearly deductible also starts again when your plans roll over.
  • Using your regular dental cleanings each year is to your own benefit helping prevent future cavities, gum disease, and dental problems. (Each insurance is different but most people get at least two cleanings a year)
  • Delaying treatment will only make it worse with time and more expensive procedures to be done.
  • Our schedules usually fills up quick before and during the holidays so try to make your appointment in advance.
  • If you have any questions regarding your insurance and benefits please call sand canyon dental at 949-727-90-77

The importance of flossing

Many people hate flossing. Why?

A while back they started talking about how floss doesn’t make a difference, and people got so excited.

I have to say I don’t agree with that, its common sense. Imagine eating all day and not removing that piece of chicken that got stuck between your teeth.

Flossing not only removes food particles but also disrupts the bacteria and loosens it up.

The manual floss is always the best option because it allows you to nicely get between the teeth and under the gum lines in order to clean properly.

For those who absolutely will not floss or have trouble with dexterity can use alternative option.

  • Dental flossers
  • Interdental brushes
  • Battery powered or electrical flossing devices
  • Waterpik

Flossing helps:

  • Reduce your risk of gingivitis
  • Help prevent future cavities in-between your teeth
  • Best time to floss is before brushing at nighttime!!!
  • Use a soft or extra soft bristle toothbrush
