The Facts About Periodontal Disease

pddThe Facts About Periodontal Disease

You may have periodontal disease and not realize it. This disease is the primary cause of the loss of teeth after age 35. if caught in its early stages , can be reversed with proper care .

Periodontal disease, or simply gum disease, is the single most common cause of tooth loss in adults. This inflammatory disease attacks the gum, bone and other supporting structures of the teeth.

Gum disease is caused by plaque, colorless film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. Plaque mixes with sugars and starches in the diet to form acid and other by-products in the mouth, irritating the gums and causing them to become red, tender and swollen.

It also causes the gums to bleed easily. If not removed daily, plaque hardens to form calculus ( tartar) .

Other Causes of Periodontal disease

  • Physical and chemical irritants such as tobacco, alcohol, toothpicks and more.
  • Abnormal oral conditions or habits such as overlapping teeth, partial dentures, defective restorations, grinding and etc
  • Unbalanced diet: there is a link between nutritional deficiency and the body’s ability to fight infection off.
  • Pregnancy: Due to fluctuations in the hormone levels, a temporary condition referred to as “ pregnancy gingivitis” occurs.
  • Certain medications: sine medications and therapy drugs may have a negative affect on the oral health.
  • Certain disease: diabetes, anemia, leukemia and other diseases may affect the health of your gums.

Familiarizing Yourself With Dental X-Rays

Sand Canyon Dental

Radiographs, also known as x-rays play a major important role in dental care and treatment planning. X-rays are a way of the dentist being able to diagnose, but it is also a way to help see problems that can be prevented. X-ray is a type of energy that passes through soft tissues and is absorbed by dense tissue. Teeth and bone are very dense so they absorb the x-rays.

X-rays:

  • Intraoral and extraoral
  • Intraoral is taken inside the mouth
  • Extraoral is taken outside of the mouth
  • Intraoral is most commonly used in dentistry and is more specified and gives us dentailed of the tooth, supporting bone and tissue.
  • Extraoral is more of an overall look of the oral cavity

What are we looking for in these x-rays?  (The most commonly asked question by patients)

Cavities:

  • Tooth root health
  • Possible infections
  • Health and level of the supporting bone
  • Status of developing teeth
  • Monitoring overall oral health

Digital radiography is a form of x-ray imaging. Where digital x-ray sensors are used instead of traditional photographic film. Advantage includes:

  • Time efficiency
  • Less radiation
  • Elimination of cost film processing
  • Enhance in the display quality

Dental x-rays are very safe and expose to your child to a minimal amount of radiation. When all standard precautions are taken, today’s x-ray equipment is able to eliminate unnecessary radiation. A lead body apron covers the body from neck to the knees and protects the body from stray radiation.

Note to patient that think they’re pregnant or are pregnant. Dental x-rays should not be taken unless you’re in major pain and emergency procedure needs to be done.

For further questions please contact the office and make an appointment with your dentist.

How to Choose a Dental Office You Are Happy With

Location and distance from your house or work / office hours: choose an office that’s
going to be close to your work area or home. We notice that patient are to be more
compliant with going to their appointments when its convenient and near by. Also make
sure they are open the days and times that you will most likely be going.

What to look for in a dentist: take your time choosing and never wait for an emergency
case to happen. The #1 thing I usually look for that I recommend to most people is
getting that initial personal comfort when meeting the staff and dentist. Lets be honest not
many people like going to the dentist so it makes it soooo much more easier and even
enjoyable to like your dentist and their staff.

Cost: always ask if they accept your insurance or not. (Don’t ever assume). Ask if they
accept different types of payment methods. Costs may vary with each dental office. You
can always get an estimate of what your dentist might charge for dental work if you do
and don’t have insurance. Keep in mind the quality of work done as well is different at
each office so don’t always go super cheap.

Search then online and read about their office and what they have to offer. I also like to
yelp everywhere however I don’t rely on them 100% but you get an idea based other
peoples reviews.

Antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental procedures

Recommendations for antibiotic prophylaxis prior to certain dental procedures have existed historically for two groups of patients:

  • Those with heart conditions that may predispose them to infective endocarditis; and
  • Those who have a prosthetic joint(s) and may be at risk for developing hematogenous infections at the site of the prosthetic.

However, compared with prior recommendation statements, there are currently relatively few patient subpopulations for whom antibiotic prophylaxis may be indicated prior to certain dental procedures.

The guidelines say patients who have taken prophylactic antibiotics routinely in the past but no longer need them include people with:

  1. mitral valve prolapse
  2. Rheumatic heart disease
  3. Bicuspid valve disease
  4. Calcified aortic stenosis
  5. Congenital heart conditions such as ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

  • All patients during the first two years after joint replacement (or as directed by their orthopedic surgeon)
  • immunocompromised/immunosuppressed patients ( inflammatory arthropathies for example rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, druge induced immunosuppression, radiation indiced immunosuppression
  • Patients with co-morbidities such as (previous prosthetic join infections, malnourishment, hemophilia, HIV infection, insulin dependent (type 1) diabetes, malignancy)

For further questions contact your surgeon , doctor , and dentist.

Thanksgiving Tips

Thanksgiving is a public holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving has traditionally been a celebration of blessing of the year, including the harvest.

Thanksgiving is a holiday infamous for many different verities dishes, many which are not healthy. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while celebrating this special holiday.

Appetizers: Cheese plate that includes cheese cut into small cubes. Nuts in different flavors, pickles, turkey slices, dried no sugar added fruits.

Cheese is a good source of calcium and protein that help fortifies the surface of the teeth.

Chewing crunchy nuts produces saliva, and chewing on vegetables produce lots of saliva to wash away bacteria.

Side dish: green beans sautéed in sesame oil helps reduce the effects of plaque

Dessert: fresh pears/apples slices with honey and yogurt dip is a good satisfying dessert to help neutralize acid on the surface of the teeth

Beverages: tap water that contains fluoride to help reduce damage to the enamel caused by acids, and fighting cavities. (To make it fun you can infuse your water with apples and cinnamon)

The importance of flossing

Many people hate flossing. Why?

A while back they started talking about how floss doesn’t make a difference, and people got so excited.

I have to say I don’t agree with that, its common sense. Imagine eating all day and not removing that piece of chicken that got stuck between your teeth.

Flossing not only removes food particles but also disrupts the bacteria and loosens it up.

The manual floss is always the best option because it allows you to nicely get between the teeth and under the gum lines in order to clean properly.

For those who absolutely will not floss or have trouble with dexterity can use alternative option.

  • Dental flossers
  • Interdental brushes
  • Battery powered or electrical flossing devices
  • Waterpik

Flossing helps:

  • Reduce your risk of gingivitis
  • Help prevent future cavities in-between your teeth
  • Best time to floss is before brushing at nighttime!!!
  • Use a soft or extra soft bristle toothbrush

Halloween Dental Safety Tips from Your Irvine Dentist at Sand Canyon Dental

Halloween is around the corner, which means access to lots of sweets!

• Stay away from things that stick (unless its sugar free) (the stickier the candy the longer it takes to come off and be washed away.

• Chew gum that has the ADA seal (chewing sugarless gum for 20 min after meals helps wash out food and neutralize the acid production by dental plaque bacteria)

• Avoid beverages with added sugar (drinking beverages with added sugar increases the risk of developing decay).
• Think twice before picking hard candies (they take forever to finish eating which exposes your teeth to long lasing sugar).
• Try and eat candy with meals. (Saliva production increases during meals )

How to Maintain Good Oral Health for Your Dog(s)

Ever wondered had to keep good OH with your furry babies

  • The good news is dogs are not as prone to cavities as human beings are. However don’t get me wrong dogs develop problems like tartar and plaque buildup and gingivitis. As with humans these dental problems can cause life-threatening infections including heart problems, lover, and kidney disease. Oral health is connected to the overall systemic health.

How to keep your dogs teeth clean:

  • Start brushing your dog’s teeth the day you bring them home. They might not like it but if you start the habit early they will get use to it. Make sure to talk to you dog in a low calm tone so they learn that this is a good thing. Rewarding them after also helps with the training process.
  • This is very important!!!! DO NOT use regular human toothpaste for your dog. Most human toothpastes include fluoride, which can be very toxic to your dog.
  • Dry food is better than soft food as soft is more likely to stick to the teeth and cause decay.
  • Chewing on toys can actually help remove and reduce the amount of plaque and keep teeth strong.

When to visit your veterinarian:

  • Bad breath
  • Change in eating or chewing habits
  • Excessive drooling
  • Red, swollen gums
  • Bumps or growths within the mouth

How often to visit the vet:

  • Like human beings best to have a checkup every 6 months

Abscess (toothache)

Abscess (toothache)

An abscessed tooth is an infection caused by tooth decay, periodontal disease or a cracked tooth. These problems allow bacteria to enter the pulp (the soft tissue of a tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue) and can lead to pulp death. When pus builds up at the root tip in the jawbone, it forms a pus pocket called abscess. This can lead to serious infections in the jawbone, teeth, and surrounding tissues.

Symptoms of an abscess include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Redness of the gums
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Fever

An abscessed tooth can be treated with various treatments, depending on the severity of the infection and the type of abscess it may be. Here are some treatment methods that dentist may consider

  • Antibiotics to destroy the bacteria causing the infection
  • Drainage of the infection
  • Cleaning the space between the tooth and the gum if the cause is from gum disease
  • Root canal treatment if the abscess is caused by decay or cracked tooth

This is why it is important to get routine dental exams done on time to reduce the risk of developing any dental problems.

If any problems occur contact your dentist’s office immediately and if is after hours best to go to an urgent care if major pain or face swelling is noticed.

The Benefits of Toothpaste on Your Dental Health

Toothpaste and its benefits:

Using toothpaste to brush your teeth (especially toothpaste with fluoride) is the first step to keeping good oral hygiene. Toothpaste has antibacterial ingredients and abrasives contained to help remove plaque. It’s important to have fluoride in your toothpaste in order to help prevent future cavities (which has been scientifically proven to increase resistance to decay). Toothpastes come in different components and flavors such as spearmint, peppermint, wintergreen, cinnamon, and lots more.

Remineralizers

Hydroxyapatite nanocrystals and a variety of calcium phosphates are included in formulations for remineralization,. the reformation of enamel.

Miscellaneous components

Agents are added to suppress the tendency of toothpaste to dry into a powder. Included are various sugar alcohols, such as glycerolsorbitol, or xylitol, or related derivatives, such as 1,2-propylene glycol and polyethyleneglycol. Strontium chloride or potassium nitrate is included in some toothpaste to reduce sensitivity. Sodium polyphosphate is added to minimize the formation of tartar.

Antibacterial agents

Triclosan, an antibacterial agent, is a common toothpaste ingredient in the United Kingdom. Triclosan or zin chloride prevent gingivitis and, according to the American Dental Association, helps reduce tartar and bad breath. A 2006 review of clinical research concluded there was evidence for the effectiveness of 0.30% triclosan in reducing plaque and gingivitis.

An Irvine Dental Topic of the Day: Healthy foods and your oral health

An Irvine Dental Topic of the Day: Healthy foods and your oral health

Sugary foods such as candy and soda, contribute to tooth decay. On the first areas to decline when your diet is less than ideal is your oral health.

Our Irvine Dental team looked into this topic closely. Here are some examples of how certain foods can benefit you and your oral health:

  1. Cheese: Many studies have shown that eating cheese raised the PH level in the mouth. Cheese also contains calcium and protein, which help strengthen tooth enamel.
  2. Yogurt: Also being a good source of calcium and protein, which makes another food option to help strengthen tooth enamel. Also as most of us know yogurt has probiotics (or good bacteria) that help build a healthy environment.
  3. Greens: Many greens such as kale and spinach also are high in calcium with build the enamel of our teeth. They also contain folic acid, and B vitamin, which can help treat gum disease in pregnant women. If you’re not a big fan of greens the best way to get them in is to add it to your smoothie or to use as your pizza topping.
  4. Apples: Some food items such as fruits might have sugar but as long as you intake in moderation they can be beneficial. For example: apples are high in fiber and water. The action of eating an apple produces saliva flow, which helps rinse away bacteria and food particles.
  5. Celery: Also contains water and just like apple it slightly
  6. Almonds: Good source of calcium and protein, and low in sugar.

These are some examples covered by our Irvine Dental team on how your overall diet not only makes a difference in your health but also in your smile.

Our Irvine Dentist discuss eating disorder and its affect on oral health

Our Irvine Dentist discuss eating disorder and its affect on oral health

 Types of disorder:

  • Anorexia: this typically involves to people who have extreme fear of gaining weight. Even though these individuals are super think but they view themselves as “FAT”. They eat excessive amounts of food at once but then throw up or take laxatives and enemas.
  • Bulimia: individuals also have the fear of being overweight. They overeat several times a week, and individuals may feel out of control eating lots of carbohydrates. After they overeat they try to undo the fact that they are so much so they quickly throw up or misuse of laxatives or enemas.
  • Binge eating or compulsive overeating. These individuals overeat but don’t immediately want to get rid of it.

Our Irvine Dentist looked into these concerns and concluded that the damage to the teeth associated with eating disorders is both mechanical and chemical wear. The enamel becomes weekend by the acid causing erosion of the teeth.

Now one can have a doubt regarding why one has to visit a dental clinic? The reason behind is oral health issues which is a common problem faced by everyone irrespective of age. Like any organ in the body, even oral health also disturbs the complete health of the body. Oral health is linked to all the parts of the body.

A regular checking of teeth at least once in a year by a good dentist or dental hygienist is always recommended. Regular dental exams and cleaning visits are essential in preventing dental problems and maintaining the health of your teeth and gums, your teeth are cleaned and checked for cavities. You can yourself analyze the problem as soon as there is a bad breadth.

Bad breath (halitosis) can be an unpleasant and embarrassing condition.  You may have this problem due to intake of certain foods like garlic, onions or food that contain odor-causing compounds which enter the blood stream and transferred to the lungs where they are exhaled. Poor oral hygiene habits, periodontal (gum) disease; dental cavities and improperly fitted dental appliances; dry mouth (Xerostomia); intake of Tobacco products; dehydration, hunger, and missed meals are some other reasons.

Fluoride toothpaste is the most widely used form of topical fluoride throughout the world. Systematic reviews of the effectiveness of fluoride toothpaste at preventing dental caries in children and adolescents have found that:

  • Fluoride toothpaste is effective at preventing caries in children and adolescents.
  • Brushing twice a day is more effective than brushing once a day
  • Toothpaste containing 1,500 ppm F is more effective than standard 1,000/1,100 ppm F toothpaste at preventing caries in permanent teeth.
  • Toothpaste containing 1,000 ppm F is more effective than toothpaste containing 250 ppm F at preventing caries in permanent teeth. Low fluoride toothpastes, containing less than 600 ppm F have been introduced specifically for young children who, because of their inability to spit, tend to swallow most of the toothpaste placed on the brush.

Sealants:

Fissure sealants are applied to the grooves and pits of teeth, usually molars, to create an impervious barrier between the tooth surface and the oral environment, thereby preventing dental caries. A Cochrane systematic review of 16 trials found that first permanent molar teeth sealed with resin-based sealant had 78% less caries on occlusal surfaces after 2 years and 60% less after 4–4.5 years compared to unsealed molars.

Managing your anxiety about going to the dentist

Managing your anxiety about going to the dentist:

Communication helps calm anxiety:

Studies have shown in order to overcome dental anxiety is to communicate with your dentist or dental hygienist.

It is common and natural for people to feel anxious when visiting a physician or dentist.

If personal anxiety is preventing you to go for your annual checkup with the doctor or to visit a dentist when in pain this becomes a problem. Doctors and dentists have been trained to work with anxious patients; therefore do not fear your visit.

Reducing your anxiety level:

Here are some additional ways to curb your anxiety:

  • Share your fears with the dentist / hygienist or dental assistant. Expressing your concerns will let your dentist adapt the treatment to your needs.
  • Focus on breathing normal and slowly because when you’re nervous you most likely are holding your breath.
  • If sound bothers you, bring your headphones or ask the office if they have any to provide you with.
  • Avoid caffeine before a dental appointment.
  • Eat high protein foods rather than surgery foods.
  • Make your appointments at a time that is best for you and your not being rushed or under pressure. (Early morning appointments are always best)
  •  tea

Other reducing factors:

  • Meditation before appointments
  • Herbal remedies such as passionflower extract, Valerian, and Chamomile (please talk to your health care professional before purchasing)
  • Medication recommended by your doctor

Oral Health and Pregnancy

Dental Visits

  • If you’re not pregnant yet, schedule a dental checkup. Have your teeth cleaned and schedule any necessary treatment. This can help reduce the risk of having a dental emergency during pregnancy.
  • If you are already pregnant or SUSPECT that you might be, let your dental office know.
  • Tell your dentist or hygienist if any changes in your health. This will help your dentist determine the best plan and treatment that better suits you.

 X-rays

  • Check-up x-rays are normally postponed during this time until after the baby is born. However in case of an emergency x-rays may be taken.

Pregnancy Gingivitis

  • Plaque buildup can irritate the gums. This makes them red, tender, and inflamed. This condition known as gingivitis can lead to more serious periodontal (gum) diseases affecting the gums and bone that anchor teeth in place.
  • This may appear early as the first trimester. An increase in hormones exaggerates the way gum tissues react to irritants in plaque.

Tooth Decay

  • Tooth decay results from repeated acid attacks on tooth enamel. The process begins with plaque, the harmful bacteria stick to the surfaces of the teeth .
  • The bacteria use sugars found in most foods and beverages to produce damaging acid
  • For suggestion on how to prevent tooth decay please refer to our blogs on decay.

Food choices

  • A well balanced diet is important to maintain for you and your baby.what you eat during pregnancy affects the development of the fetus, including the teeth.
  • The babies teeth begin to develop between the third and sixth months of pregnancy. A sufficient quantity of nutrition especially vitamins A,C, and D, protein, calcium, and phosphorous are needed.

Trick Or Treat

images

Halloween is around the corner, which means lots of yummy free candy.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind before Halloween day!!!

Time It Right

  • Eat Halloween candy with meals or shortly after mealtime. Saliva production increases during meals. This helps cancel out acids produced by bacteria in your mouth and rinse away food particles.

Stay Away from Sweet Snack

  • Snacking can increase your risk for cavities

Choose Candy Carefully

  •  Avoid hard and sticky candy and other sweets that stay in your mouth for a long time.
  •  Sticky candy like caramel take longer to come off the surface of your teeth .
  •  Candies that stay in the mouth for a long period of time subject teeth to an increased risk for tooth decay

Have a Plan

Have your family pick their favorites and donate the rest .

Drink More Water

Drinking fluoridated water can help prevent tooth decay

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Your body is like a complex machine. The foods you choose as fuel and how often you “fill up” affect

your general health and that of your teeth and gums.

Stay Away from Sugary Beverages

This includes soda, sports drinks and flavored waters.

Chew Gum with the ADA Seal

Chewing sugarless gum for few minutes after meals helps reduce tooth decay,

This helps   increase saliva flow which then helps wash out food and neutralize the acid produced by bacteria.

Xylitol in gum help prevent cavities : Spry gum or ice breaker gum are some options out there

images-2

 Brush Twice a Day

Brush your teeth gently twice a day for two minutes if using an electrical toothbrush ( 4-5 if using a manual toothbrush) with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Remember, replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won’t do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

Don’t forget to floss

Floss your teeth once a day before brushing and before bed time. Decay-causing bacteria get between teeth where toothbrush bristles can’t reach. Flossing helps remove and disrupt plaque and food particles from between the teeth .

Receding Gums: Cause and Treatment

Receding Gums - Irvine Dentist - Sand Canyon Dental

What is gum recession?

Receding gums, also known as, gingival recession, is a common dental problem among many people older than 65. Gum recession can start at an early age and it’s important to take preventive measures before the problem gets worse.

The main concern with receding gums is that the roots of your teeth become exposed leaving your teeth susceptible to decay, infection, and even loss. The good news is, you can stop gum recession with proper dental care.

Why are my gums receding?

Poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease are connected to gum recession. However, receding gums can happen to people who have good dental hygiene.

There are two common causes of gum recession:

  1. A wear of the gums
  2. Inflammation of gum tissue (a reaction of our immune system)

Some people are more prone to gum recession because of inherited factors such as tooth positioning and the thickness of their gums.

If you brush your teeth too aggressively or use a harder bristle brush, you can cause physical wear of the gums over time.

Plaque is a common enemy when dealing with recession. Plaque buildup causes gingivitis, which can later turn into periodontitis. Periodontitis results in an increase of space between your gums and teeth. This loss of connective fibers leads to receding gums.

Treatment options:

For mild gum recession, you do not require any treatment. Dentists may just advise you to brush with a soft bristle toothbrush and to

monitor your gums.

If you require treatment, these are some options available to you:

  • The use of a desensitizing agent, varnish, or dentine boding agents.
  • Composite restoration
  • Composite or Pink Porcelain
  • Gingival Veneers (removable)
  • Orthodontics
  • Surgery

The Link Between Diabetes and Dental Health

Are you at risk for dental problems if you have Diabetes?

This is a question that often comes up with dental patients who suffer from diabetes. Before we answer that question, lets familiarize ourselves with gum disease. The more severe kind of gum disease Periodontitis which occurs when your teeth start pulling away from your gums. Those new pockets that are formed begin to harbor germs and pus which erodes your teeth. The only solution to save your teeth then becomes gum surgery.

Dental Health Problems - Sand Canyon Dental - Irvine Dentist CALets break down the link between Diabetes and Dental Health:

Over 30 million Americans suffer from Diabetes. To add to the list of complications that arise from Diabetes, such as kidney disease, stroke, heart failure, is gum disease. Research now shows that gum disease is more prevalent in individuals who have Diabetes.

What if I only suffer from gum disease. Am I at risk for Diabetes?

Most people wouldn’t think of gum disease and diabetes as a two-way street, but research actually proves otherwise. Serious gum disease can affect blood glucose levels increasing the progression of diabetes.

It is very important to brush and floss daily to prevent dental health problems, such as gum disease, down the line.

Prevention of dental health problems associated with Diabetes:

It’s quite simple, really. First, focus on maintaining and controlling your blood glucose level. Secondly, make sure you see your dentist for a routine check-up every 3 to 6 months, floss and brush your teeth regularly, and avoid smoking. If you have dentures, remove them and clean them daily.

Proper Brushing Technique 101

Kids FlossingI’m sure at some point you have heard your dentist tell you how to properly brush your teeth. We thought we’d give you the complete guideline of the do’s and dont’s to proper brushing techniques.

First order of business, you want to get a soft to medium tooth brush. Nimbus makes a great line of tooth brushes that we actually provide to you as a sample. Go here to view a selection of Nimbus toothbrushes on Amazon.

Second, you want to make sure you brush your teeth gently to avoid any gum recession. A gentle scrub with small horizontal movements will help remove the plaque and keep your teeth in good health. A lot of people want to get the brushing over with so they feel the urge to scrub fast and hard. This is definitely not a good solution. Take a breath and slow the stroke 🙂

Here is a list of brushing tips you should keep in mind when brushing:

  1. Gentle scrubbing technique
  2. Soft bristle toothbrush (Nimbus)
  3. Hold toothbrush like a pen to avoid excess pressure
  4. Spit out fluoride toothpaste and do not rinse after you have completed brushing your teeth.
  5. Recommended to brush twice a day (Morning and before bed).

Recommended Flossing Techniques:

  1. Break off approximately 18 inches of floss from the container.
  2. Tie around one finger on each hand
  3. Use your thumb to generate movement for those hard to reach places
  4. Keep floss against the tooth and away from the gums while moving the floss up and down.
  5. If the floss gets frayed, then just unwind some of the floss wrapped around your finger and use an unused area.
  6. Below is a picture of other floss products you may use.

Dentistry Today: Fluoridated Water vs. Fluoridated Salt

Community water fluoridation (CWF) has been finding ways to enhance oral health/hygiene for over 70 years. However, fluoridated water isn’t always available to some communities using fluoridated salt as an alternative.

A team of researchers from various countries recently conducted an investigation to see the “effectiveness of fluoridated water in Porto Allegre” (located in South Brazil and fluoridated salt in Montevideo in Uruguay).

Fluoridated Water Beats Fluoridated Salt in Preventing CariesThe team of researchers conducted studies on 1,528 children around the ages of twelve years old in Porto Allegre and 1,154 in Montevideo while collecting hygiene health, demographic info, and maternal education. The collected estimate:

Children from Porto Allegre were not as affected by dental caries than the children in Montevideo (those exposed to salt showed higher signs of caries).

Dentistry Today spoke with Luana Severo Alves, PhD, of the department of restorative dentistry in Santa Maria, Brazil, over the studies. Below are some common questions and answers that came up from the study. To read the full article, please visit the link at the bottom of this page.

“Thank you Dr. Najaran, Dr. Samonte, and staff. I truly appreciate the services you provide. I have been to 2 other offices in Irvine in the past where the hygenists were like car salesmen pressuring me to get my teeth cleaned 6 times a year. And don’t get me started on the doctors selling me invisalign and recommending veneers when my teeth are perfectly fine. And I’ve wanted to strangle the front office staff because they were so incompetent. At Sand Canyon Dental, they are the best. Dr. Najaran’s hands are hands of an angel. Every treatment or exam is practically pain and anxiety free. Every hygenist and assistants that helped treat me are great. And the front office staff are willing to work with you and your insurance. I’ve been a patient for 3 years and I am a patient for life.

Dr. Samonte-Mora

Review for: Dr. Samonte-Mora

Review Site: Yelp

“After years of dental searching and finding the WRONG dentists in Irvine, this is the one.

First off, their office is very warm and inviting, the front desk staff is on top of everything. When they tell you they will call you back, they call you back. I didn’t wait on hold at all, I didn’t go through some major process to join up.

Upon arrival to this very relaxing neutral toned/painted office, I was offered coffee and one of the most relaxing front area chairs I’ve ever sat in. I didn’t have to wait long (5 minutes?) before I went back. We did a full mouth xRay as I haven’t had one done in a long time. They made the whole process easy, as little pain as possible (those xRay’s aren’t fun) and the best part everything is digital, so we get the results immediately.

I had a tooth bothering me and feared a root canal.. alas, it was just a filling needed, and I got a full cleaning from the dental hygenist, who was also extremely friendly and inviting to their office.

I had Dr. Samonte, and she was perfect.. I’ve never had a dentist sit and go through each tooth with me one by one to show me any problems or anything that needs done. She only did the filling, and mentioned the other services I would need in the near future, but did not PUSH me to get them done that day like other dentists.

I would highly recommend this group to anyone, they take most major insurance plans and belong to most discount plans. What a jewel Dentists in Irvine!”

Review for: Dr. Najaran

Review Site: Yelp

“I can’t rave about this place enough!

First off…the office staff is amazing! Every time I go to an appointment it seems like Im visiting longtime friends. They greet me with a smile, small talk about things they remember about me, and offer me coffee or water while I wait (which, I’ve never waited more than about 2 minutes!)

As far as the dental work…I’m a huge fan of Dr. Najaran! Dr. Najaran is not only very professional and thorough but she also takes the time to get to know me with her friendliness and easy going personality. Like most people I’m not a fan of going to the dentist but this has been my best experience yet! Dr. Najaran takes the time to explain her findings, references her recommended treatment by showing you your own teeth on a digital monitor, and ensures your questions, comments, or concerns have been acknowledged before proceeding further.

Lastly, I read comments on here about the serene office decor. Think Day Spa meets chic dental office… its like it screams Relax! You’re in great hands.”
