Our Irvine Dentist discuss eating disorder and its affect on oral health

Our Irvine Dentist discuss eating disorder and its affect on oral health

 Types of disorder:

  • Anorexia: this typically involves to people who have extreme fear of gaining weight. Even though these individuals are super think but they view themselves as “FAT”. They eat excessive amounts of food at once but then throw up or take laxatives and enemas.
  • Bulimia: individuals also have the fear of being overweight. They overeat several times a week, and individuals may feel out of control eating lots of carbohydrates. After they overeat they try to undo the fact that they are so much so they quickly throw up or misuse of laxatives or enemas.
  • Binge eating or compulsive overeating. These individuals overeat but don’t immediately want to get rid of it.

Our Irvine Dentist looked into these concerns and concluded that the damage to the teeth associated with eating disorders is both mechanical and chemical wear. The enamel becomes weekend by the acid causing erosion of the teeth.
