Dentistry Today: Fluoridated Water vs. Fluoridated Salt

Community water fluoridation (CWF) has been finding ways to enhance oral health/hygiene for over 70 years. However, fluoridated water isn’t always available to some communities using fluoridated salt as an alternative.

A team of researchers from various countries recently conducted an investigation to see the “effectiveness of fluoridated water in Porto Allegre” (located in South Brazil and fluoridated salt in Montevideo in Uruguay).

Fluoridated Water Beats Fluoridated Salt in Preventing CariesThe team of researchers conducted studies on 1,528 children around the ages of twelve years old in Porto Allegre and 1,154 in Montevideo while collecting hygiene health, demographic info, and maternal education. The collected estimate:

Children from Porto Allegre were not as affected by dental caries than the children in Montevideo (those exposed to salt showed higher signs of caries).

Dentistry Today spoke with Luana Severo Alves, PhD, of the department of restorative dentistry in Santa Maria, Brazil, over the studies. Below are some common questions and answers that came up from the study. To read the full article, please visit the link at the bottom of this page.
